Curly Hair Routine: in 4-steps
Share
While straight hair will dry without needing products and still look gorgeous (we love that), our curly hair needs a little more love. This blog will give you a loose suggestion for a 4-step routine that works for most curly heads.
This is a rough frame to go by when getting started:
- Low-Poo Shampoo
- Conditioner
- Leave-In
- Gel
First and foremost, keeping your curly hair clean is essential to prevent buildup and ensure optimal product absorption. A low-poo shampoo will be your go-to for this task (if you're wondering why, check out our previous blog post on the topic). Regular cleansing clears away dirt and prepares your hair for the products that follow, so that your hair absorbs and gets the most amount of benefits from the products you’ll be applying.
We recommend washing with a low-poo shampoo once a week. If you're used to washing more frequently, twice a week should be the maximum to avoid drying out your hair. With time and experience, you might find that you can stretch some washes to every 10 days, but once a week tends to be the sweet spot for most and should be your target goal.
After shampooing, it's time for conditioner—a step you should never skip. Conditioner replenishes lost moisture, hydrates your hair, and helps fight split ends, heat damage, and breakage.
Since you're washing once a week, this is also the perfect time to detangle your hair, as there will be many knots by now. With wet hair and conditioner applied, use a wet brush to gently work through any knots. This should be your only detangling session of the week.
While some prefer using their hands to rake through the tangles, we find that a good wet brush does the job effectively. Stay tuned for our upcoming blogs where we'll discuss recommended wet brushes for detangling and styling.
After rinsing out the conditioner, your hair should be damp or wet. If you squish your hair, it should make a squelching sound. Now, it's time for leave-in conditioner. This will provide moisture that lasts for several days and protect your hair from the weather and lessen the amount of knots that are likely to happen.
Next, apply a curly hair gel. This not only defines your curls but also seals in the moisture for the days ahead. . This is probably the holy grail product of every curly head with beautiful defined curls. Don't be alarmed if your hair feels crunchy as it dries. Once its fully dry, you can use a cotton shirt to scrunch your hair towards your scalp which break your hair out of the crunchy cast. This technique, known as 'scrunch out the crunch,' leaves you with soft, defined curls.
